What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
Emotional Freedom Technique was founded by Gary Craig in 1995. It involves stimulating the acupuncture meridians while tapping on them with the fingertips which is why it is often called "Tapping." It uses affirmations, words and phrases to concentrate on whatever you're dealing with whilst tapping to bring about an alleviation in the symptoms of a negative experience or emotion. There is a substantial body of recent research evidence showing its clinical effectiveness in a wide range of settings.
I am qualified in Applied Emotional Freedom Technique which means that I am qualified to use EFT within a counselling context. I have found EFT particularly useful to help with phobias, fears and anxiety related issues. It seems to literally take the "emotion" out of whatever you're dealing with, leaving you to apply your normal logical, rational thoughts without getting distracted by whatever emotion is tied up with the experience. Within a counselling context, we can get to the root of what is causing you stress, anxiety, etc. and then break that link in your brain with the negative emotions associated with it.
The Benefits of EFT
Because EFT is a mind body practice that can coax you back in to a state of calm, it may help soothe everyday stress, mitigate food cravings, foster focus and more for generally healthy people without diagnosed mental health issues. When used in a therapeutic setting, it may help with anxiety, phobias, and other mental health issues.
According to The Wellness Institute these can include:
- Reduce Stress and Anxiety: EFT may help to reduce the levels of cortisol in your body, which is a hormone that is associated with stress. By reducing your stress levels, you can feel more relaxed and calm.
- Improve Emotional Well-Being: EFT may help to release negative emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness. By releasing these emotions, you can feel more positive and optimistic about life.
- Relieve Pain: EFT has been shown to be effective in reducing pain levels in some people with chronic pain conditions.
- Increase Energy: EFT can help to release emotional blocks and improve the flow of energy in your body, which can leave you feeling more energized and vibrant.
